International symposium in Astana adopts resolution on Golden Horde heritage

«The Golden Horde as a Model of Steppe Civilization: History, Archaeology, Culture, Identity»

From 19 to 20 May 2026, the International Symposium “The Golden Horde as a Model of Steppe Civilization: History, Archaeology, Culture, Identity” was held in Astana, the capital of the Republic of Kazakhstan, bringing together more than 300 leading scholars, experts, and specialists from 23 countries.

The participants of the Symposium, guided by the high principles of respect for cultural diversity, the historical memory of peoples, and international humanitarian cooperation, adopted the present Resolution, in which they:

  • Welcome the aspiration of the Republic of Kazakhstan to expand active international cooperation in the academic study of the historical and cultural heritage of the Golden Horde and the civilization of the Great Steppe;
    • Express their profound appreciation to UNESCO for its substantial contribution to the development of scholarly and educational dialogue and for its comprehensive support of research advancement;
  • Call upon international organizations and research centers to consolidate efforts aimed at the systematic study and promotion of the heritage of the Golden Horde through the implementation of interstate cultural projects and humanitarian initiatives;
    • Emphasize the need to reassess the historical role and phenomenon of the Golden Horde within the framework of a broader civilizational approach;
  • Underscore the importance of a comprehensive understanding of the Golden Horde’s civilizational matrix, with its profound intellectual and spiritual traditions, effective institutions, and advanced economy;
    • State that the Golden Horde represents a unique historical example of a multicultural society founded upon the principles of ethnic and religious pluralism, serving as a model of successful interaction among diverse peoples and cultures;
  • Declare that the Golden Horde made a significant contribution to the formation of the political and cultural traditions of the Great Steppe, to the development of nomadic and urban civilizations of Central Eurasia, as well as to international trade, diplomacy, legislation, numismatics, arts, and crafts;
    • Recognize the special importance of preserving the archaeological monuments of the Golden Horde as an integral part of the world’s historical and cultural heritage;
  • Point to the necessity of safeguarding the intangible heritage of the Great Steppe including music, epics, oral traditions, and folklore as the spiritual legacy of nomadic peoples;
    • Advocate for the expansion of international fellowships, joint research programs, and academic mobility for scholars specializing in the study of the Golden Horde and the civilization of the Great Steppe;
  • Call for the support and advancement of interdisciplinary and international research projects dedicated to the study of the heritage of the Golden Horde and the Great Steppe, which will contribute to closer ties among peoples and to the long-term progress of Central Eurasia as a whole;
    • Express gratitude to the Republic of Kazakhstan for the organization and the high level of preparation of the Symposium, which is planned to be held on a regular basis, as well as for the systematic and consistent promotion of Golden Horde studies within the international scholarly agenda.

The present Resolution is intended to serve as both a conceptual and practical guideline for scholarly, educational, cultural, and humanitarian activities. Its recommendations may be utilized by research institutes, academic communities, international organizations, and other stakeholders as a basis for the further deepening of international scientific cooperation.
